Cops seize $65 million worth of cocaine
More than $65 million worth of cocaine was seized by police at the Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited on Saturday.
A release from the Constabulary Communication Unit (CCU) indicated that the drug was in a container, which arrived from the Netherland Antilles on Friday.
Detectives attached to the Narcotics Division along with the Jamaica Customs Agency’s Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) became suspicious after they notice a discrepancy the seal that was placed on the cargo.
A detailed search of the container was done and 50 rectangular parcels containing cocaine were seized.
The drug, which weighed approximately 57 kilograms or 127lbs, has an estimated street value of $65.3 million. No one was arrested in connection with this seizure.
“We are of the view that this seizure has made a major dent in the illegal drug trade,” commanding officer for Narcotics Division, Senior Superintendent of Police McArthur Sutherland said.
Sutherland said that the police will continue working with partner agencies and stakeholders in securing Jamaica’s borders and disrupting the activities of major drug trafficking organizations.
