Jamaican woman makes history, commands US Navy destroyer

A Jamaican woman, Janice Smith had her name written down in the history books on May 2, 2016.

This after she became the second African American woman to command a US Naval flight ship.

Smith assumed command of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) during a recently held ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk, Virgina.

Smith is a native of Morris Hall District in St Catherine. She migrated to Florida in 1988.

Smith’s appointment also makes her the Oscar Austin’s first female commanding officer.
