Cops kill 20-year-old
THE man shot and killed by officers in Freeport on Tuesday has been identified as 20-year-old Rasheed Alexander.
Police said a team of officers from the Central Division was on patrol in a marked police vehicle along Mungal Trace Freeport when they observed four men standing to the rear of a white Nissan AD Wagon at around 2.40am.
As the officers approached the group one of the men turned and ran through an open gate on the eastern side of the road.
Constables Ali, Ramjattan and Husbands gave chase through the open gate where they observed the man drew a firearm from his right front trouser pocket and continued to the rear of the house. The officers called on the suspect to stop, drop the weapon and surrender to the police, investigators claim.
Police said the man then turned towards the officers and started firing at them. Fearing for their lives, the officers returned fire, they alleged.
The gunman was injured and was assisted and taken to the Chaguanas Accident and Emergency department where he succumbed to his injuries while being treated.
Police claim they found a Beretta 9mm pistol fitted with an extended magazine.
The deceased has been identified as Rasheed Alexander, unemployed, of Mungal Trace, Orange Field Road, Freeport. Alexander’s body was identified by his father.
