Snapchat launches Bob Marley filter on National Weed Day
It is 4/20 or National Weed Day as some know it. It is the unofficial weed holiday that sees weed lovers across the globe, light up at 4:20 in the afternoon to celebrate.
And one of the latest social media tools, Snapchat is also in on the celebration.
On 4/20, the Snapchat team launched a Bob Marley filter that many are calling tasteless.
The Marley filter gives users both dreadlocks and what many are calling the digital blackface.
“I love #BobMarley but um…isn’t this technically black face? @Snapchat?” one user questioned.
“Well, there’s a Bob Marley @Snapchat filter for today. (Just in case you didn’t want the effort of buying paint to do blackface),” another wrote.
Many thought it was disrespectful to the reggae legend, not only because it automatically gives users a black face and dreadlocks but because it was launched just in time for 4/20.
“The Bob Marley filter on Snapchat is not ok. It’s racist and perpetrates a stereotype. He did more than just smoke weed #420 #BobMarley,” said one user.
But according to a spokesperson from snapchat, this was done solely out of appreciation for Marley’s music.
“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.”
