PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Wednesday March 23, 2016 – A man who was on remand awaiting his trial on a murder charge was fatally stabbed in a confrontation with another prisoner yesterday morning, police say.

Joe Parks, 30, was stabbed in the right side of his neck and about his body, in the incident at the Golden Grove Prison that occurred around 10 a.m.

Reports indicate that an argument between him and two other inmates escalated into a physical altercation, with one of the other men using an improvised weapon to cause the fatal injuries.

Parks was taken to hospital for treatment but he died around 1 p.m.

The two suspects in the stabbing were subsequently handed over to police and witnesses interviewed.

Meantime, two prison officers, aged 37 and 38, were arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle cell phones and a cell phone battery and charger, a tablet computer, lighters, a knife, an ice pick and other contraband into the same prison that morning.
