Montague Meets With UK Officials To Discuss Prison Transfer Deal

Newly-appointed Minister of National Security Robert Montague is today meeting with officials at the British High Commission to discuss the controversial prisoner transfer deal between Jamaica and the United Kingdom (UK).

Ahead of a visit to Jamaica last September, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that as part of the proposed transfer deal his government was in discussions with the then Portia Simpson Miller administration to spend £25 million to help build a new prison in Jamaica.

Cameron revealed that as part of the deal 300 Jamaican nationals who are serving sentences in the UK prison system would be sent back to Jamaica to complete their sentences.

The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) was among several local groups who publicly opposed the proposed agreement.

In his first major interview since taking over the National Security portfolio last week, Montague declined to say whether the JLP’s position has changed since it was elected to form the government.
