Family Affair In Gordon House
When Prime Minister Andrew Holness takes his seat in the new Parliament today, he will have the enviable record of being the first head of government to have his wife sitting no further than a glance behind him.
But even before she enters the precincts of the chamber, Juliet Holness, the member of parliament for St Andrew East Rural, is expected to fulfil a promise she made to her husband on the campaign trail in January.
“I will walk with you,” said Juliet to Andrew in her first public address as the then-candidate for St Andrew East Rural.
That pledge will unfold today when the pair walks down Duke Street to expected cheers from supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party.
Juliet Holness defeated the People’s National Party’s Imani Duncan-Price in the February 25 general election, amassing 10,172 votes to her opponent’s 9,482 votes.
Opposition Family Affair
It will also be a family affair on the other side of the political divide with the father-and-son combination of Dr Peter Phillips and his son, Mikael, who will again share time as legislators in the Lower House.
Pearnel Charles, the man who will take charge of the House of Representatives as Speaker, will no doubt take some interest in supporting his son, Pearnel Charles Jr, as he takes his seat in the Senate.
